Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Summitville, Colorado

July 11, 2017Posted by Webmaster

Summitville is one of the most well preserved ghost town sites from the mining era in all the site. It ranks up there with Animas Forks, Ashcroft, and Tomboy. Two clearly defineable rows of buildings still exist, and the worn roads are still visible. At this site, there are around three dozen still standing structures.

According to Ken Jessen's Ghost Towns : Colorado Style vol 3 Summitville was one of Colorado's largest gold mining sites. Gold was discovered in 1870 in small amounts. At one time, the population was 1500 with 9 mills in operation. By 1956, the population was only 12 miners. The town was abandoned, but mining continued into the 1990s. A cyanide spill leaked chemicals into the Alamosa river, placing it on the US Superfund list.

I recorded several videos and spliced them into a video pan you can watch here.
