Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Alta, Colorado

Alta, Colorado is famous for being the first site to use Tesla's AC transmission system. Mines in the area were worked from 1877 until 1948. These mines were originally powered by coal which had to be taken 4 miles a day by pack mule up to the mine. Converting to electricity and constructing the powerplant solved these problems. The town itself has suffered. Arson burnt one of the historic buildings in the area, and a development company plans to sell lots for large houses here. Alta will soon lose its historic appeal.
