Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Camp Jeffrey, Colorado

Discovering Camp Jeffrey was purely an accident. It happens when you are looking for, say, Turret... and you take a wrong turn. Then you keep telling yourself it's just a little further, and you'll see Turret any minute. A friend of mine, Shannon, wanted to do some exploring in his Dodge RAM, so we were looking for some easy 4WD roads a truck could take. At the intersection road which takes you to Turret, we went on an unmarked road straight west into Railroad Gulch. We should have been heading northwest. This intersection was at the location of Hematite.

The road kept changing from a regular dirt road to a 4WD road with large stones. It is narrow. Even a jeep would scrape paint. There is one occupied cabin (seasonally) before reaching the site, and one era cabin before that. After several miles, we came to the road end, marked with caution tape. We could see railroad grade remains, and we followed them for about 1 mile. Along the way, you will note some of the trail (even the hiking trail) has been washed away and requires scrambling to follow. You will also cross the rotting remains of an old bridge. The site had several collapsed structures. As Shannon pointed out, termites will soon eat whats left of this site. Several mines above the site exist, and you can see down into the Arkansas River Valley from nearby.

Not much is known about its history. According to Ghost Towns : Colorado Style, the town was founded in 1882 as Hancock and renamed to Camp Jeffrey in 1891 for the Denver and Rio Grande's new president. Ken also says that the buildings were mainly of milled lumber but prospectors came later. I did not see any milled buildings remaining, just debris fields. Cabins did remain.
