Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Pitkin, Colorado

November 15, 2016Posted by Webmaster

The mining encampment was originally known as Quartzville, to later be renamed to Pitkin in honor of the Colorado governor. Pitkin got its post office in 1879, and by 1880 the population was over 1000. As winter came for the 1880-81 season, the population of Pitkin left because at that time it was an unheated tent city. When the population returned the next summer, it was estimated 4000 people called Pitkin home. By 1883, the population had again dropped to 500. Much of Pitkin was destroyed by fire in 1898 and again in 1903. Pitkin survived by shifting its economy to lumber for the coal mines, and this ended in the 1950s. Despite the fires, the town is full of historic structures and well worth the visit.
