The history of Leadville takes up an entire book (see the resources section) so these are just a few highlights.

Oro City was the first area of settlement. Many located to the Leadville area when they encountered more complex ores. Horace Tabor built his famous opera house here, owned a gas and electric plant, and while Leadville was in its infancy he was postmaster. He left Augusta for Baby Doe here, and nearby is the location of his famous Matchless mine. Many original buildings still exist, as well as several historical museums, sites, and societies. The mining area east of town is a great place to explore.
