Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Glory Hole Mine, Colorado
The Glory Hole Mine's history is a little obscure to me. From my understanding it was at one time a mine tour. With the advent of gambling in the area, the history of the area is of little concern to most who come here now.
In Stampede to Timberline, Muriel Wolle's driving companion refers briefly to the town site of "Bortonsburg". It is described as being on a hill to the right of the road when travelling between Central City and Russell Gulch and that it was never a big place. According to her companion, it can be found on early maps of Gilpin county. According to author Ken Jessen, he thinks this is the site, but hasn't found evidence to back it. True indeed, the mined out area above the highway would have needed an encampment to be worked. This does match the very vague description given. Was this the old town site of Bortonsburg?
