During the 1860s, a small settlement appeared along the Purgatoire River near the Sante Fe trail. Founded by Thomas Boggs, Boggsville was settled to begin ranching on the Colorado Plains and to capitalize on Sante Fe trail patrons. The community lasted only 11 years, but was home to the first public school in Colorado. Famed scout Kit Carson spent his final months here.
