Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Marble, Colorado

Early prospectors looking for gold moved on, ignoring this area�s most precious resource - marble. First recorded in 1873, the marble deposits near here sat untouched until Charles Osgood entered a block in the 1893 World's fair. In 1899 the town of Marble was incorporated. Marble from the quarries here have been used in the Denver capitol building, the Equitable building in NYC, Lincoln memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The quarry closed in 1941 but reopened in 1990. Now a walking tour is available to hike, but only with special connections does one get to enter the quarry site itself.
