Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Ashcroft, Colorado

August 20, 2016Posted by Webmaster

T.E Ashcroft purchased the site and renamed it to Ashcroft in 1881 and began to actively promote the site. In 1885 the population topped out at 3500. When the Denver and Rio Grande extended the line into Aspen in 1887 and made no plans to extend the line to Ashcroft, the town started to decline. Famous investor of the day Horace Tabor's investing luck ran out at the Tam'O Shanter-Montezuma mine above Ashcroft. He did not recoup his $12 million investment. Horace made frequent trips here, and in 1883 brought his new bride, Baby Doe. By 1912, the post office was closed.

Today, it is one of Colorado's best preserved ghost towns, with a seasonally operated tour guide. The main street is still visible, and many structures remain, most being labeled with historic markers. Even among the empty places, you can see groves of bushes and trees where buildings once stood. (The ground below decaying lumber is full of nutrients, as a result collapsed buildings often harvest splendid flora.) Access is by way of a nice paved road 11 miles from Aspen.
