Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Smole Lumber Camp, Colorado

November 15, 2016Posted by Webmaster

Only the townsite name is known, yet it is easy to find. Recently, this was e-mailed to me : The sawmill was originally operated by three brothers and one brother-in-law, thus named Smole Bros Lumber Co. All, but the older brother Mike and his wife Frances, moved on. They remained along with their four children to operate the business. Their entire family played a part in this business with jobs such as driving the logging trucks, working in the woods and sawmill, cooking meals and bookkeeping. At times there were as many as ten extra employees, some of which came as far as Arkansas. They logged from the local woods and produced lumber for boxes, crates, planks, house logs and railroad ties. Summers were extra busy with friends and family coming on the weekends to fish in that area. In the fall, the camp was full of activity with the hunters arriving for the deer and elk season..All of the grandchildren have pleasant memories of spending time with their grandparents during those years. Mike and his wife eventually retired after living there for about thirty-two years. Submitted by Michael Smole, Jr.
