Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Como, Colorado

June 13, 2015Posted by Webmaster

By June of 1879, a tent city had sprung up in Como's location. It was where rails split off of the Denver, South Park, and Pacific railroad to go north over Boreas pass to Breckenridge. By 1881, the town had 500 residents. As mining stopped in the area, so did the need for a railroad. In 1937, the last trains left Como, and it became a ghost town.

Today, it is being rebuilt and is occupied year round, yet it retains its historic nature. Photographers to this area will stay for hours. There is much to explore.

Built in 1881, the six stone bay roundhouse served as a division repair shop for the Denver, South Park, and Pacific railroad. Tracks came from Kenosha pass and ran to Leadville, Breckenridge (via Boreas Pass), and to Gunnison via the Alpine Tunnel. Over the next two decades, wooden additions were built, totalling thirteen bays. In 1983, the roundhouse was registered as a historic site and currently is being restored.
