Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Tabasco, Colorado
The town sites of Tabasco, Berwind, and Tollerburg are all in Berwind Canyon and were coal mining towns. As you enter the canyon from Ludlow, you encounter the town sites in that order; however it is difficult to tell where one town ends and the next begins. At one time, many thousands of people lived in this canyon. There is also a mesa with foundations on it; I am unsure, but I believe these were part of Berwind. Another town, Valeroso, was so close to Tollerburg that one cannot tell which town site you are in. The towns mined coal for the smelters in Pueblo. As the railroads were pulled out of the area, the mines shut down and people moved on. There was a schoolhouse between Berwind and Tabasco near what is now a tailing pile, and remnants are everywhere.
