Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Rosita, Colorado

According to a sign located within Rosita itself, the town started out as a farming community with cattle grazing as its primary industry. Signs at the Beckwith Ranch north of Silvercliffe also mention this. The down became a silver mining town and had a population of 1500 by 1878.

In Kenneth Jessen's book, Ghost Towns : Colorado Style, it is revealed that four men from Pueblo came to the area in 1863 searching for a lost mine. Ore was found, assayed, and forgotten until chance got some ore specimens noticed.

Although once the county seat, fire swept through the business district in 1881 and it was never rebuilt. The county seat was moved. In 1958, Saddle in the Wind was filmed here, and MGM converted many of the original buildings to a more "western" look.

Today, itís hard to tell which buildings are original. Only a few still remain, and most of the area is now a resort community. The original 1870 cemetery remains, as do many of the mining slag piles which gave wealth to this town for many years.
