Crestone, located out of the way to the north of the Sand Dunes, is an occupied town that maintains many of its origins. Although it was almost abandoned, its post office has been open continuously since 1880.

In 1868, it became a supply depot for miners heading south to mine in the Baca Grant. Nearby ghost town sites include Duncan, Liberty, and Cottonwood. In 1972, the town had less than 50 people.
