Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Tarryall (Puma City), Colorado

October 16, 2019Posted by Webmaster

Tarryall, once called Puma City, should not be confused with the original Tarryall Diggings site, or the site after called Tarryall City.

A gold outcropping was discovered in 1896 by Rocky Mountain Jim. Near his claim, Puma City was founded. In 1897 the population of Puma City peaked at 1000. The post office opened in 1896 under the name Tarryall, reusing a name of the Tarryall City site which had been abandoned long before. The post office closed in 1909, only to open again in 1914 and close once more in 1933. By 1905, the population was a mere 25.

As people left, they sold their land to Mr Derby, who ended up owning most of the town. Today, there is a schoolhouse and several older buildings surrounded by modern ranch houses.
