Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Phantom Canyon Area, Colorado
The Florence and Cripple Creek railroad was constructed from Florence to Cripple Creek in 1894, passing through town sites such as Adelaide, Alta Vista, Dale, Glenbrook, Loop, McCourt, Russell, Wilbur, and Oro Junta. When the railroad was abandoned in 1912, so were many of the towns.
The canyon was barely wide enough for the railroad in places, so towns, railroad stations, and any other settlements were constructed in the few places where the canyon became a small valley.
Most of the ruins are gone, washed away by floods or time. The railroad grade has now become part of the scenic byway system of back routes. Each location is marked by a slightly open valley and the town site name. Other than grassy fields, nothing remains.
Updated : Upon my last visit, a small foundation was found at Adelaide and several at Wilbur. Because of this, these two sites now have their own listing.
