Colorado Ghost Town Photography - Cripple Creek, Colorado

March 31, 2020Posted by Webmaster

Cripple Creek, of course, is no ghost town. It is included to cover more completely the area's history. Discovering riches in 1876 in Poverty Gulch, Bob Womack staked his first claim in 1886. By the end of 1893 there were 150 active mines in the area. On April 29th, 1896, a fire destroyed much of the business district. At the time, nearly 5000 of the estimated 16000 population was left homeless. The Saturday fire was followed by another major fire the following Wednesday, this time involving a boiler explosion and 700 pounds of dynamite. The town was rebuilt of brick.

Today, the main street is lined half with modern casinos, and half with older era buildings converted to Casinos. In one building in November 2007, a sign was up claiming to be the place the root beer float had been invented, however this was closed as of Feb 2009. A three building walkthrough museum, train ride, and the Mollie-Kathleen mine tour make this a good place to find something to do.

Updated : Added 8 pictures of historic interest from my 06-17-09 visit.
