Edwin D Hepburn began his duties as a ranger in 1905. He grew up in Fairplay where his parents owned a hotel. He was responsible for the forest in most of Park County. Men were required to pass a written and practical exam before they could become forest rangers. Along with being good ambassadors, early rangers enforced forest rules and regulations. Duties included fighting fires, marking boundaries, catching poachers, maintaining trails, and catching ranchers grazing unauthorized lifestock.
