Colorado Ghost Town Photography - American Eagle Mine, Colorado
I don't usually like to include mine complexes as "ghost towns" unless they really give a historical feeling. Such is true with the American Eagle Mine. It can be reached by a decent dirt road from Victor and is operated as a self-guided tour with historic markers all around. The surrounding mountain has been virtually destroyed by open-pit mining.
This mine was owned by William Stratton, owner of the Independence complex in Victor. The mine closed in 1940. The blacksmith shop, hoist tower, and other support structures and equipment can be toured.
NOTE : The access road to the American Eagle has moved. It is now located near the Little Theresa mine parking area instead of above the Independence Mine. The strip mining company said the road was moved to allow working in another area.
